When does the lavender bloom in Provence? Unfortunately there is no exact answer to this question! As a general rule, however, the best time to see the lavender fields in the Luberon is mid June to mid July. This period does differs a little, depending on the exact location, and the weather conditions each year. Lately, it seems to be earlier and earlier.
Saignon is literally surrounded by lavender fields. From sweeping fields of perfectly aligned rows of lavender to tiny little plots of land belonging to individual families, lavender is the crop of choice for many a Saignonnais. After all, what better view to wake up to than a sweeping expanse of fragrant lavender?
The plateau de Claparede, just above Saignon village, is the perfect spot for a photo opportunity. Alternatively, drop down below the village, on the way to the hamlet of Saint Quentin to admire the fields of fruit trees, lavender fields and grape vines. Picturesque, quiet and utterly beautiful and just 5 minutes from Villa Vauvert.
To make a day trip of the lavender experience, head to the famous plateau of Valensole. A short, scenic drive from Saignon, through country roads lined with plane trees and charming villages like Cereste and Forcalquier, there is plenty to see on the way. Count approximatiely 1 hour to get there. The Route de la Lavande is after Manosque, between Valensole and Brunet (RD8).
Alternatively, take a scenic drive towards Sault, not far from the iconic Mont Ventoux, also approximately 1 hour from Saignon. At nearly 1000m altitude, this plateau blooms a little later than the lavender further south, so is still good for a visit in late July. Follow the Chemin des Lavandes from Sault. There are multiple paths adapted for hikers, and bike riders. Check out the itineraries at:
